一棵树和一只鸟儿是最好的朋友。鸟儿坐在枝头，每天给树唱歌，而树每天都在倾听鸟儿的歌声。
随着日子的流逝，寒冷的冬天悄然来临。为了生存，鸟儿不得不离开她的朋友，飞向遥远的地方。
在告别前，树对鸟儿说：“再见了，小鸟！明年请你回来，再给我唱歌。”
“好的，我会回来的，请等我！”
于是，它们分别了。
春天又到来时，那片原野和森林里的雪融化了。bird return to the place, looking for her old friend tree.
然而，一切都不一样了，只剩下那棵曾经站立的地方留下的根系。
“那棵曾经站在这里的老朋友现在去哪了？”bird ask the roots.
roots reply: “被伐木人用斧子砍倒，然后运往山谷去了。”
bird flies down to the valley.
in a big factory in the valley, there is a loud sound of cutting wood.
bird lands on the door and asks: “Mr. Door, do you know where my old friend tree is?”
door replies: “Tree? It was cut into thin strips here, made into matches and sold in that village.”
so bird flies to the village.
by a girl with an oil lamp, bird asks: “Miss Girl, do you know where those matches are?”
girl replies: “Matches have been used up. But the fire lit by them is still shining on this lamp.”
then bird looks at the light for a while before singing again just like she did last year.
after finishing her song, she looks at light once more then flies away.
